Open Your Eyes to The Benefits Of Blepharoplasty
You may be asking yourself, “What on earth is a blepharo… how do you say that again?” A blepharoplasty is the formal terminology for the medical procedure many refer to as the eyelid lift. The medical terminology for this treatment may seem complicated but the procedure itself is in fact relatively simple and yields truly fantastic results. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or even a combination of the two areas for an overall complete rejuvenation of the eye area. Perhaps the natural transformation a blepharoplasty provides is why it has become one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures across the country and certainly a favorite of Dr. Steven Porto’s here in Fishers, Indiana.
A facelift alternative
The first signs of aging often begin around the eyes and the blepharoplasty gives a rejuvenated look without the cost or downtime of a traditional facelift. The eyelid lift aims to address the hooded look or “crepe” like appearance of the upper eyelid and the puffy undereye bags of the lower lids. It does not treat crow’s feet or dark circles but if often done in conjunction with other cosmetic services such as injectables like Botox or dermal fillers which are also offered at our office in Fishers, Indiana. The upper eyelid lift involves the removal of excess skin and fat via subtle incisions within the natural skin folds of the lid. The removal of excess skin with the upper blepharoplasty can even improve the field of vision for some patients suffering from the effects of excessively hooded eyelids. Lower blepharoplasty removes excess fat to decrease the appearance of puffiness and smooth the undereye area. Patients also often combine their amazing blepharoplasty and injectable results with a medical grade skincare regimen, such as ZO Skin or Skin Better, and esthetic treatments for an overall look that defies the laws of aging.
What to expect for the procedure
At Porto Cosmetic Surgery, we offer the upper eyelid lift done same day in our office in Fishers under mild oral sedation which relaxes the patient and allows them to stay awake but pain free throughout the procedure. Patients simply medicate in our office and are numbed locally in the treatment area and bring a driver to ensure they safely return home following the procedure.
The lower blepharoplasty, a slightly longer procedure, is best done in a more traditional operative setting where the patient is placed under general anesthesia and is discharged the same day following treatment. Sutures are removed 10 days post operatively in office and bruising and swelling is normal as is common with any surgical procedure. Some patients have reported slight light sensitivity and watery eyes for a brief period post op. All things considered; the blepharoplasty offers minimal downtime for maximum results. It’s a win-win.
Scarring
Scarring is a concern for many when it comes to surgery, and facial surgeries is certainly no exception. Dr. Porto, an experienced and board-certified cosmetic surgeon, is well versed in the blepharoplasty. Scarring, or lack thereof, is often commensurate to the surgical skill, and with Dr. Porto you are in expert hands. The sutures of the blepharoplasty are strategically placed within the natural creases and shape of the eyelids to minimize their appearance. The results of the eyelid lift surgery are long lasting, but the loss of skin laxity is normal as we age so touch up procedures may be needed. On average the blepharoplasty can turn back the hands of time anywhere from 5 to 10 years or even more for some patients.
While it may have a complex medical name, the blepharoplasty has proven to simplify the concerns of aging around the eyes for cosmetic surgery patients far and wide.
